Smart Home Spotlight: Shades

What are smart shades? They are automated shades that can be controlled by a remote control or smart device. Perhaps, you never considered having smart shades in your home or business but here are 7 reasons why you should.

Convenience

Think of the convenience that garage door openers provide. It can be snowing, cold and icy outside but with the touch of a button you can open your garage door without leaving the comfort of your car. Although you could take the extra minute to get out of your car and manually open the door, most people would agree that a garage door opener is something they wouldn’t want to live without. Automated shades operate on the same principle. Once you realize the convenience they provide, you won’t want to go back.

  • They can be operated by a remote control, keypad, smart device, set to a time clock and can be voice controlled with the Alexa and Google assistants.
  • You can easily operate shades on large or hard to reach windows.
  • Schedule your shades to automatically open or close with sunset and sunrise.

Temperature & Light Management

Beyond the convenient operation of these shades, is the fact that they can be used for temperature and light management. Is there a room in your home with a lot of windows that gets very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter?  You can choose the opacity you want and control how much sunlight comes through. By choosing the best opacity for each room, you can maximize the efficiency of your shade. You may end up with a room-darkening shade in your bedroom, a translucent shade in your dining room and a sheer shade in your kitchen.

Energy Savings

If you do have a room where you want to use the shades to help heat or cool the space, they can help save energy. There are certain fabrics with a high R-value to help insulate a room. And by setting your shades to a time clock, you can maximize your energy savings. Even when you are gone or if you forget to lower your shades before you leave, your shades can still be working for you. Another added bonus is the protection for your furniture.

Low Maintenance

Automated shades are battery-powered, which is great because there are no wires required and they can be easily integrated into any home. And even better is the fact that they operate on regular D-cell batteries with an average battery life of 3-5 years. This means you won’t continuously be changing the batteries or ever have to search for a special battery. These shades are also dust resistant so you don’t have to worry about cleaning them.

Visual Appeal

Oftentimes, functionality and visual appeal don’t go hand in hand. With these shades, they do. There is a vast selection of fabrics and styles to choose from so these shades can integrate seamlessly into any décor. Some of the shades come with top treatments so you don’t need curtains or drapes, while others come without if you would prefer to add them yourself. Either way, these shades will visually transform any space.

Kids & Pets

These shades are 100% cord free, which makes them safer for children and pets and they operate quietly as to not wake sleeping children. In addition, they are durable. If your kids decide to manually pull on them, it will not hurt the shade. Remote controls can also be mounted on the wall to keep them out of reach of curious little ones.

Simplicity

People tend to ask if these shades are user friendly because they don’t want anything complicated. The answer is there is nothing complicated about these shades! If operating your shades via your phone sounds difficult, you can simply have them set to a remote control and all you need to worry about is one button. If you want more features such as the time clock function, then that can easily be set up. You can do as much or as little as you want but either way the shades are easy and simple to operate.
